Solved and Unsolved Problems

Many unsolved problems actually have valid solutions posted, but are classified as unsolved simply because they didn't have solutions posted by the asker. Can we introduce a system that allows high rank members, to mark a problem as solved when a valid solution is posted by a member?

Not sure how exactly this would work. Maybe solutions can be thumbed up or down, and once a solution has 3 thumbs up, the problem is classified as "solved"?

Currently I think currently the solved and unsolved problems list is quite deceptive, for users who want to tackle problems that noone on the site has solved yet.

Re: Solved and Unsolved Problems

Some years ago we went through a very lengthy process of trying to sort out some of those. It is not a process that I'd personally like to co-ordinate.

That process, headed by Tristan, a scholar who has not been present for quite some time, meant drawing up a list of problems which were cited as not having a solution. A team them read through them to determine if a solution did in fact exist, or comments did meet what the writer proposed. Where appropriate solutions were then published.

I am not completely sure how Tristan compiled his listings but I think that some of those details are published within the body of one of the first three forums.

One deterrent for me about replicating that exercise is the far fewer active members here these days as against back then when there were many who could share the load.
