Annual Puzzle championship

Check it out here: http://wpc.puzzles.com/.

I think we should have a team Perplexus this year :)

Hurry, only a few days left to register!

Re: Annual Puzzle championship

I'm going to try that. Based on the practice test, it will be very interesting and tough!

Just found this thread from last year's puzzle championship.

Has it been a year already???

Re: Annual Puzzle championship

Well, I took the test, and I got about 122/437 points. It's quite fun and challenging. The puzzles they use are mostly puzzles that need to be printed out so you can work on the diagrams with pencil and paper. There were only 2 and a half hours to do the puzzles, so I'm still keeping my printouts to do more later.

Like DJ last year, I have the pdf file if anyone wants it.

Re: Annual Puzzle championship

I got an e-mailing saying that this year's Annual Puzzle Championship is June 18th and the last day to register is tomorrow, June 16th. Anyone who wants to register should do it now. It's the same address as before, http://wpc.puzzles.com/ .

Re: Annual Puzzle championship

It's over now, but I can e-mail the puzzles to anyone who wishes to see them. I believe this year I got 135/395, a modest improvement over last year. The puzzles are very difficult. I'm still trying to figure some of them out!

Re: Annual Puzzle championship

Charley, I tried sending an e-mail to the address you gave, but I got a failure notice. Perhaps I'm missing something that should be obvious, but I can't figure out what your address is from what you said.

Re: Annual Puzzle championship

Thanks Tristan. Id liek to congratulate you on your speed. While none of the problems (upon initial inspection) seem that they would be Cory-unsolvable, in the (though somewhat unfocused as Im doing them at work :) ) 2-3 hours Ive spent on these Ive reached only 60 points. I spend so long figuring out how to figure the problems out, that by time I find an answer, I should be 2 questions further along :(

Good luck with your results.

I would like them too; I'm sorry I missed it!

I'm assuming Charley did his backwards because there are bots that pick out the forward version now too, so mine is likewise backwards.

Re: Annual Puzzle championship

This is not a team event. From the rules:

Outside help of any kind is not permitted. This means: no assistance of any kind from any other person; also no books, calculators, computers, or tools other than items explicitly permitted. You are allowed to use writing implements, erasers, paper, and any items explicitly required to solve a specific problem.

Re: Annual Puzzle championship

Well, not a team in the explicit 'teamwork' sense during the two and a half hour event, but in the 'association by common identification' sense.

So are you in?

Re: Annual Puzzle championship

I've been participating in this competition every year now for at least the last 5 years, maybe more. It's always a lot of fun. In fact, I've been lucky enough to score high enough several times that Nick Baxter, Captain of the US WPC team, has sent me some prizes in the mail! He sent me a Google t-shirt one year which is one of my prize possessions.

Good luck to all of you who participate! Have fun! The time limit is what makes this competition such a challenge... but it's always great fun spending the next few days solving all the puzzles that stump you during the test.

Please email me if you know of any other good puzzle sites! I'm always looking.

Re: Annual Puzzle championship

So, how'd all you do?

I think I did a lot better this year, but we'll see.

As always, I will take requests to e-mail a copy of the test for those who missed it.

Re: Annual Puzzle championship

I think I did better too, but I'm not sure how I'm penalized for submitting answers after the deadline. I am still going nuts trying to find the tenth "obvious" difference in number 7 (Mice). I feel good about the rest of them though.

Tristan, I would appreciate a copy of the test. Thankyou

That's funny, I also couldn't find the tenth difference in number 7. Unlike previous years, I was able to solve every single puzzle (in the hours after the deadline), but I still can't find that last difference.

Re: Annual Puzzle championship

After looking at the answer sheet and seeing that slightly longer line on the garbage can I was pretty frustrated. I had gone so far as to flop the second image and build a stereogram where all the differences stand out and shimmer (it looks pretty cool) but I still couldn't notice that line...

Oh well. My favorite was the plus/minus kakuro. That was pretty cool.
