Songs with a Photographic Theme
Hp is currently running a television ad with theme song lyrics something like ... people taking pictures ... to prove they loved one another ... a long time ago. This has some really interesting anthropological and human psychology implications.
In his song, Kodachrome, Paul Simon seems overly concerned that his mother will not allow him to use a certain kind of film. Somehow, proper function of the memory portion of his brain depends on it.
The lyrics to another song suggest the singer is being altered genetically. It goes ... I took your picture ... to the Doctor ... so I could see you from the inside out ... I think I might be turning Japanese.
Another television ad conveys ... I've had your picture so long that I'm beginning to think it is real. Is this a condition that can be helped by counselling, or would a quality enlargement be the better choice?
And something our forefathers and mothers never had; digital photography. Along with the Internet, digital cameras have enhanced our lives to the point where we are all able to quickly, easily and affordably enjoy oh, so many varieties of pornography. Isn't that great?
Anyone care to comment? |

Re: Songs with a Photographic Theme
I'm not sure what you're getting at.
I thought you were going to ask what other songs are photography related, like Yes' _Camera_ and that insipid Thompson Twins songs that starts out "I've got a picture, pinned to my wal..." |

Re: Songs with a Photographic Theme
Hee hee! I haven't heard these jingles, but I assure you that they must be correct - advertisers would never try to over-hype a product's qualities, would they? If they say a camera can turn you Japanese, well gosh-darn it I'm sure they have to know-how to do it.
That's progress, that is. It's a golden age we live in. |

Re: Songs with a Photographic Theme
Yes, Erik, that's it! Tell us about it. Every song has some underlying theme and affects different people different ways.
Remember Send Me The Pillow That You Dream On and the huge overload it caused for the US Postal Service just after it's release?
Or, how about how excited many religious leaders, railroad engineers, and paramedics became over Teen Angel?
Then there was 9 To 5? Gosh, all the sexual harassment cases that followed. Lawyers and the courts absolutely loved it. |

Re: Songs with a Photographic Theme
Ah, I think I'm catching on...
Way back when I was a young man the Song _Jenny_ by Tommy Twotone (or how ever he spelled his name) caused a big rukus because everyone was dialing 867-5309.
Apparently there was some retired school teacher with that number who had to change her number because she had the same one.
As far as causing religious uproar, just about anything that came out in the '80s did plenty of that, especially stuff by Ozzy.
There was also _Don't Fear the Reaper_ by BOC that was banned in some areas because it supposedly caused teenagers to commit suicide.

Re: Songs with a Photographic Theme
Oh boy, and do you remember the amount of time it took the Department of Days and Years to sort out the confusion that resulted from the Beatle's song "Eight Days a Week"?
And thank God they finally caught the guy who had been sneaking into people's bed room with an electric drill, after hearing the Tom Waits song with the line "sing me a rainbow, steal me a dream."
But seriously now. All in all, it was truely irresponsible, and, in retrospect, downright criminal, for REM to come out with a song entitled "Try not to Breath." |

Thank you, Sam, that's oh so clever of you. The Beatles bit, I mean. Seems to me, too, the Beatles put a photo in at least one of their songs. Was there one in Penny Lane? Try Not To Breathe is neato as well. |

Re: Songs with a Photographic Theme
Ringo Starr had a hit with the song "Photograph".
There was also a song in the 60s called "If I had a talking picture of you" done by various people. I think Judy Garland had a similar song in the 40s.
On the phone number theme, AC-DC's Dirty Deeds had a line "Just ring 36-24-36-8" which was a real number here in Australia. Drove the woman crazy for years. |

Beatles song with a photograph
"A Day in the Life"
I just had to Laugh, I saw the photograph...
and "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" has two references that could be stretched to apply if one really wanted to...
...Maxwell Edison majoring in medicine calls her on the phone,
Can I take you to the pictures Joan.
... Maxwell stands alone
Painting testimonial pictures oh oh oh oh...

Re: Songs with a Photographic Theme
Juggler - J. Geils Band was the original I think, with Jump 5 and Less Than Jake covering it. I could be wrong though.
Another Simon and Garfunkel - America
She said the man in the gaberdine suit was a spy
I said be careful his bowtie is really a camera. |

Obviously -> Filter's - "Take a Picture". One of the best songs ever.
"Could you take my picture
'Cuz I won't remember
Hey dad what do you think about your son now"

Re: Songs with a Photographic Theme
Along the same lines...
Pictures of Matchstick Men - Status Quo (Ozzy Ozborne, Camper Van Beethoven)
Photograph - Def Leppard
A Photograph of You - Depeche Mode
Girl in the Picture - Mario
The phrase "picture in my wallet" appears in songs by no fewer than: Kenny Chesney, Stone Sour, Martina McBride, Clay Walker, Barry Crompton, Barry Manilow... |
