Katrina - Hurricane - August 2005

Our planet is frequently devastated by natural disasters; the most recent and significant was the Tsunami in the 'East Indies' region.

In Australia we noted that "Santa never made it into Darwin... A big wind came and blew the town away." [Trust my lyrics are true - Bill and Boyd if memory is correct]

For my part, I have been fortunate not to have experienced direct 'fall-out' from such an event. The closest was a mini tornado [100-200m/yd width] cut a diagonal swathe across our town. In a town of some 4500-5000 people where buildings are generally only at ground level, damage, though significant, was minimal.

Care to share some thoughts, experiences, ...

Is there one part on this planet where one could be guaranteed 99.9% safety against the elements? [Don't publicise it. We'd have everyone going there. It would be like damming the Amazon, making Brazil 'top-heavy' and tipping the 'continental' iceberg. I reckon Mt Erebus would be safe. I'd need food drops, and ... somebody who could resist commenting upon my 'underarm' body odours .. as if I'd have them!!]

Something said may just heal something.

On the 23rd, we had 180 kph (about 115 mph) winds in Montevideo, and they caused plenty of damage, so you can take Uruguay out of your list.

A god's hurricane

I heard that some people thought the hurricane was sent by God (the christian one, it was understood) to punish the "godless people of New Orleans."

But couldn't it have been a greek (or aztec, or egyptian, or nordic, or ...) god, who was angered because nobody revered him?

Equally, is killing thousands of people and ruining their homes the way a "loving" god would use to convince people of his love?

Just some random ideas...

Hi brianjn, good to have u back. Hi Federico, hope u OK after that. Hi OOO I believe I have deduced the possibilities of God...

There is no God, or

There is one God, hence Katrina proves God does not bless America, or

There is >1 God, in which case I can only assume Bush's god is the god of war

Oh, and that place uneffected by natural disaster -The White House- it would seem.

Katrina and the power of prayer

Just thinking a bit more, if all believers in Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, etc., etc., prayed for Katrina to go elsewhere (never mind the others, just save my a$$!) then the power of prayer is proved, about 9 to 1 or even more... only the people of New Orleans and Biloxi weren't successful, but prayers worked for everybody else!

(Yes, I'm counting those guys in Oregon too, who also prayed against Katrina, and got their prayers answered -- the storm stayed away!)

Re: Katrina - Hurricane - August 2005

The only thing I (an agnostic) can pray about after this is that the US president finally sees some remote possibility that humans effect on the environment (climate change) is directly relavent and maybe stpe up a little bit in that regard, equalling the other developed nations in such things as the Kyoto accord, so that the right example may be set for newly developing nations to follow. If the US (as self proclaimed world leader) doesnt set this example (and assuming that we are affecting the environment in a net-negative way), imagine the damage that could be done as countries in Africa and Asia, with populations dwarfing those of the currently industrialized nations, follow the industrialization path. Maybe this event on his doorstep might be a little more persuasive than happening elsewhere, and maybe the apparent increased frequency of such events lately will strengthen that push.

Link that with a closer dialogue with China too which is ravishing for fuel sources to support its rising economy.

Global warming and its consequences

Given that recently some congressmen went to Alaska, saw with their own eyes that some lands there are totally ice free, and YET insist that global warming doesn't exist... what can anybody expect of a theocratic president whose family money depends on the industries that produce the warming?

Re: Katrina - Hurricane - August 2005

I note that that just within the last few weeks, the media has made announcements that certain authorities have been forced to denounce their stand because data collections have been rendered somewhat void due to failure to update data collection procedures.

I was driving at the time and so could not concentrate; I felt that the pro Kyoto lobby gained support because of some kind of change in satellite technology. I believe that the original data collection procedure was NOT upgraded. I cannot confirm that conclusively, but I think that the announcement may have caused some major re-thinks.
