Long, Long Pages

Sometimes I select a thread where the last posting is miles off my screen.

I'd love to be able to "instantly scroll" to the bottom of the page. Having finished there, it would be great to either return to the top of the page or be able to have the options, which I know are up there, down here for my choice.

I think that it would be useful for "Chatterbox history" pages in particular, ie, quick navigation.

Is there sufficient feeling for me to consider to "bug levik" with such a request?

I could anticipate that, if such a mechanism could be put in place, existing long pages in Forums might be too difficult to address with this idea.

What are your thoughts?

Re: Long, Long Pages

That sounds like a good idea. I would also like to see a "search" function in the forums, similar to the one on the main page for searching problems. It takes a long time to go through the forum postings looking for information.

Yes, I too would appreciate a "search" function in the forums. It would be especially helpfull for me when I have one of these "How do I format..." questions again.

Re: Long, Long Pages

If this is a bandwagon I am jumping on.
As a relative "newbie" a search function would be gratefully and often used.

A search function useable on "comments" would also be welcome.

Re: Long, Long Pages

Clarify what you mean by that. Are you referring to phrases within comments, authors of comments?

Re: Long, Long Pages

As you wish.

I am referring to phrases within comments. (Authors are easy enough to find.) For example, today I wanted to find the comment in the "Five Fives" problem that first used the term "subfactorial". Instead of paging through each of the 372 comments in that thread, it would have been nice to be able to use a search function for the term and have the comments containing the term identified in the search results.

Re: Long, Long Pages

How might this work?
Allow a box to record the Puzzle Name and another to carry the search phrase?
Or just one for the search phrase with Puzzle threads containing that phrase being reported?

[ ... er ... I lost the link phrase - "bug levik"; there is a link, but not what I was looking for on the Home>About page "let us know". Anyone know, please? Or has it been replaced with this one?]

Home page under "Petition Director" (top right)gives opportunity for suggestions etc.

Re: Long, Long Pages

Thanks, that was the one for which I was looking; I have used it before! Going blind!

I had in mind a box just for the search phrase. All Puzzle threads containing that phrase would be reported -- after you cancel the pop up advertisement.

Re: Long, Long Pages

Mindrod, the search facility does seem to work.

I needed to check upon spherical problems so I keyed in "spheres" and also checked search body.

I also tried "tetrahedron". Both searches came back with problems where the word was either identified in the title or the problem body.

Just go one step further I did choose to seek for a phrase "tangent to" which I know does exist. And it returned a list of problems.

I tried 'subfactorial' but it apparently doen't exist in problems although we know that it resides in a couple of responses (at least) in the forums.

As yet I have not "bugged" levik re the top and bottom navigation buttons. And from my quick search on those few words/phrases that would waste the time of levik and myself.

Well, thanks for taking some time to consider the idea, brianjn.

Re: Long, Long Pages

Thank you.

If you have any thoughts of your own that you wish to address directly to levik, take the "Petition Director" link; it's available when you logon - I lost it a few days ago, too tired, too ... [ --- ], anyway quite sane but ... blind.

If you haven't already done so, levik sends you back an email with some pertinent reference.
