Scavenger Hunt

Hmmm... So I'm completely befuddled on the very first hurdle in Flooble's "scavanger" hunt (http://flooble.com/scav). Do I have to be a major league hacker? Do I have to know PHP? Oh well, I'm not looking for any actual answers, more like a "it's easier than you think, stupid! Why don't you use your brain for once??" or something along those lines... Anyone here solved the puzzles?

Re: Scavenger Hunt

I wish we could edit posts. That way it wouldn't look like I was making fun of Levik's spelling of "scavenger" by my putting it in quotes and then spelling it wrong myself...

Re: Scavenger Hunt

I found that when I log off the Scavenger hunt, I also log off Flooble, and when I log back on to Flooble, I log back onto the scavenger hunt. Since I normally check off the remember me button, I'm gonna be logged onto the hunt the whole time. That means I'll probably have a longer time finishing the challenges than Sam on challenge 2. I wonder if the computer recognized my username or something. Or maybe it's the cookies. Oh well, not like the time matters...

Re: Scavenger Hunt

OK, gang, let's be more careful about spoilers. (I already had to delete one)

And since now the first person to finish all the challenges will get a free flooble T-shirt (see the game page for details) that should spur you guys on to try a little harder ;)

I am thinking that if this proves popular, we will enable additional "trails" of challenges, perhaps even user-submitted ones.

Re: Scavenger Hunt

Yes yes indeed. My apologies for bringing up something that would obviously start to generate spoilers. I need to be more careful with my tongue in future (some say I should start to use my fingers for typing, but pshaw...).
Multiple trails seems like a good idea, though. It's a bore to get stuck on one and not be able to go anywhere (wretched challange four...).

Damn you, Challenge 4! You will be the bane of my procrastination. How am I supposed to avoid study when I can't even get past that level.

Levik,
Is there any way to run some sort of Scav forum, with some tips (NOT spoilers)? Maybe divided up into challenge levels. It's just REALLY annoying to be stuck on a challenge and have absolutely no idea how to get through it. When, just maybe, a little prodding it the right direction by a fellow Floobler (hey, I like that word!) could get you going.

Nah, just kidding. Some of us started this puzzle long before any of you young 'uns needed to be bribed with such worldly treasures (about a day before, to be precise)... The thrill of the chase was enough for me!

I'd challenge SilverKnight and DJ for first over the last hurdle, but I expect that they have far more time that me to work on it than me... It's not because I'm not good enough, I swear - it's a time issue. Just time!

Re: Scavenger Hunt

I did challenges 1, 2 and 3 relatively quickly, but I am stumped as I know virtually nothing about javascript. The source gave up
<script language=\"javascript\" src=\"tra1ler23?challenge=4&page=start\"><script>, as you probably know, but I have no idea where to start on looking at it. I typed it into the url, and it says "Internet explorer is unable to download...etc". Is it just me? Is this because something's been closed down? I would hate to give up now. A small hint at how it's harder in IE wouldn't go amiss.

I have also tried

javascript:tra1ler23?challenge=4&page=start

and others.

I als found this script somewhere (I forget where):
<HTML><SCRIPT LANGUAGE=javascript>var __w=tra1ler23?challenge=4&page=end;if(__w!=null)document.write(__w);<SCRIPT><HTML>

What do I have to do??

Re: Scavenger Hunt

My guess is that your Real player browser won't work either, but I've never heard of it, so I'm not certain.

I know #4 can be solved using Netscape, because that's what I used before, and assume that it can be solved on Mozilla Firefox. Both are free, and highly recommended alternatives to the buggy, vurnerable & worm-ridden IE (not that I'm biased, I swear). Mozilla's browser is especially recommended.

Ok. I have tried other browsers, and I get a source message (replacing "start" with "end") that says: document.write("your goal is synonymous...").

Re: Scavenger Hunt

Blast - now you've got me interested in it again. Sheesh.

I'm still as stuck as ever on #8. There are a couple possible clues in there: the page title, the font, the possible letter you see if you look at the colors "another way"... but I can't fit these pieces together.

I've tried bringing the page into my own editor (ie notebook) so that I can make it more like the page title, but that gets me nowhere.

It doesn't look like anyone has asked any questions about this challenge. Perhaps noone else has found it difficult. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could give me some hints.

So, coming back the the scavenger hunt after a long time I find that I am no further on challenge eight than I was... jeeze, a year and a half ago (has it been so long?!?).

Supposedly about five people have passed it, and they all talk about how wonderful it is, and about how all you have to do is *think*, and blah blah blah blah blah.

I'M STUCK!

Are any of you mythical 8-solvers still around? Anyone want to help a poor lonely scholar who's been on this site too long and has grown old and tired? Anyone who hasn't solved come up with revelations that might benifit from teamwork?

If you are tearing your hair out over the 8th challenge, take it from me; You'll be glad you figured this one out yourself. Just give it some time, and don't try to overcomplicate things. Puzzles this clever and challenging don't come around every day.

Re: Scavenger Hunt

Joe, no need to post twice, I'll help.

Send me an email, and be sure to tell me what you've tried so far. Saying "I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO! I'VE TRIED EVERYTHING! I CAN'T GET IT!" will not help at all. If you don't tell me what you've already done, I can't help you. You're probably close to the answer, but not quite there.

Re: Scavenger Hunt

Simon, click here to see my user information. There is a hint there. You say you found the word. That is only the first part of the answer.

Inspecting HTML
