Most Popular Problem; new feature idea

I was thinking about which Perplexus problem is my favorite. That led me to think about a new feature idea: a system of voting on which of the 2000+ problems is the favorite.

Several ways this could be done:
- there's already a scoring system, but not sure how widely used it is
- each member could get one vote on which is the best
- any other suggestions?

Re: Most Popular Problem; new feature idea

That's a cool idea. One possible problem with it is, once you use your vote, and an even better problem comes along, can you change your vote?

Re: Most Popular Problem; new feature idea

Votes could be weigted by age with older vote counting for less. That way the most popular problems could change over time (like top-40 songs do.) If a problem keeps getting votes over time it could stay at the top.

I don't know it it matters anyway because so few people vote on problems. (I never remember to unless a problem is particularly good.)

Re: Most Popular Problem; new feature i

The most obvious change of implementing a "favorite puzzle" vote is that votes will be given more weight. Each user only has one vote (but there is opportunity for abuse with multiple users). How would we decide on a favorite puzzle? Perhaps we should be able to pick more than one favorite. For example maybe we should receive 1 vote per X total puzzles in the archive, or 1 vote per X number of days as a member (Both of these have their drawbacks). I imagine this is all probably too hard to implement, especially if we were to be able to delete votes.

If we were to change the rating system, I would just simplify it. Instead of 1-5, we would just have +1, and -1, which would add up like the TU/TD voting system.

Re: Most Popular Problem; new feature idea

The rating system on here isn't used much and so its results aren't often accurate. There was a big discussion on here about what to do about that and the best idea I had is to make it possible to submit a comment without rating the problem, but make it require effort to do so. (Perhaps put "No rating yet" in a drop down box along with the other 5 numbers.)

The problem I have with "favorite puzzle" is I have a lot of problems on here I like a lot, and several of them are my own! I don't know how I would choose just a few. Also, would a "favorite" problem suffer the discreteness of 1 and 0? For example, a simplified case would be the best problem may get the most votes, but it will overshadow the second best and third best problem.

Re: Most Popular Problem; new feature idea

This is odd, I had been thinking about starting this thread myself recently. Still me an' Larry do think alike so maybe not so strange.

Anyway my idea is this, we each just submit a list of our faves on a new thread, each list can be as long as you like. Then once we have X(10 maybe?) probs each submitted by Y(3 maybe but we can see how it goes..) different people we can start another thread where ppl can vote on the top X.

There could be an issue with probs that are posted in early lists being duplicated by copiers. I suggest we don't start the list submission thread untill a few of us have got lists ready to get it going.

Re: Most Popular Problem; new feature idea

I hope this thread has only gone quiet because everyone is busy researching their favorite problems. What do u think of my idea?

Re: Most Popular Problem; new feature idea

Here is my idea. In addition to the "Add to Watch List". you can "Add to my Favorites". Then, when you see a problem you like, you could just "Add to my Favorites"

In someone's profile, you could see a list of their favorite problems (maybe with a link to it)

Re: Most Popular Problem; new feature idea

Gamer has an interesting idea. Each user could have a list of up to 10 problems, perhaps. Each user could rate and list their favorite problems, reorganizing their list whenever they wanted. A new link on the perplexus home page titled "Favorite Problems" would take users to a composite list of everyone's favorites. Most cited, highest ranked problems could appear at the top (possibly also weighted by the user's status and personal ranking).

I'd expect to see "Five Fives" on somebodys list. Are we any closer to finding 778?

Most Popular Problem; no more talking

My List

10 Points go to "Noisy code" from Sam
Because it is a thing that is standing there before you, without any further explanation

7 Points go to " Box game" from Tristan
Because I spend so much time on it and enjoyed doing so

5 Points go to "Class pass" from Gamer
Because I liked Charlie's solutions and all the variations on it.

4 Points go to "Throwing needles" from Sam
Because the fact that the solution surprisingly enough contains Pi

3 Points go to "All wired up" from Sam
Because I solved it so nicely, effectively killing all futher similar problems with other numbers of wire.

2 Points go to "Inspector Morse" from Juggler
Because I spend so much time on it and enjoyed doing so

1 Point goes to 'Three for all" from Levik
Because the solution is counterintuitive

Re: Most Popular Problem; new feature i

One thing about Gamer's idea ("Add to my Favorites") would be that there could be a global list showing the top 10 problems, based on how many "My Favorites" lists each problem belonged to.

Re: Most Popular Problem; new feature idea

"Rotating an Array" by e.g. made me think but the solution was neat in the end.
"Lovelorn Snail" by SilverKnight the 1st intro to Perplexus.
"Hay Che Aydee - Aysee Hay Che" by myself, purely because it was a release after the JC thing and kinda fun.
The "Conversing club" problems by Gamer. Fantastic series
and any of Levik's "Liars and Knights" puzzles

these are in no particular order, just some that I like,

Re: Most Popular Problem; new feature idea

"Haunted Mansion" is now also in my Most Popular Problem list, because of the originality.

I like Gamer's "Add to my Favorites" idea. My favorites would contain (in no particular order):

XX by DJ
A Song for the Season by Gamer
Marbles Bonanza by levik and
It's unsolvable! by Tristan

Hopefully, I linked everything correctly.

I like Haunted Mansion and HGHFE.LIT a lot; I hope these types of problems continue to show up on the site.
