help with some logic puzzles...

Thanks!

A man with a seven-gallon bucket and a 4 gallon bucket goes to a well to exactly five gallons of water. He has no container other than the buckets. How can he get exactly five gallons of water?

Ms. Marino assigned 2 homework problems the first night of class. On each of the following nights she gave twice as many problems as the previous night. After four night, all the homework problems in the first unit had been assigned. How many homework problems were assigned in the 1st unit? If she continued this pattern, how many prolems would she assign the tenth night?

A boy in an anicent history class brought in a coin marked 345 BC. Members of the class were all excited until one of them pointed out that it was fake. When they had thought about it for a moment, the entire class agreed. How did they know it was a fake coin?

Re: help with some logic puzzles...

Sigh... when will it end?

Classified, please visit the FAQ page (http://perplexus.info/faq.php). In the first topic you will see that we are asked to NOT post puzzles in the forums as it disrupts the structure of the site.

In the future, please use the search feature (for instance "jug" or "bucket"), or look through the archives of a particular topic. You may find your problem already exists on our site.

And finally, answering puzzles in the forum is discouraged since that would ENcourage folks to post more puzzles here, plus we don't like to do other people's homework FOR them (though we would be happy to give general tips and such). So you should not expect a response.

Nikki, relax. You are wasting your time- it will continue forever- people don't read. You could provide a link to a site where this question is answered or you could ignore it. One thing is for sure-if people don't read the FAQ why should they read your essay? I admire your solving power- i don't admire your short temper.
No offence meant- i just thing your "when will it end" sends out the wrong message to people who don't know much about the site.

Re: A.N.

You're right, it did send out the wrong message since I didn't have a short temper at all. It was more of a resigned "here we go again" kind of thing. I know it will never actually end, as new people will always be unaware simply because they are new.

As for "no offence meant" - I did take offence to several things you said. Not severe offence, just several "ouch"es along the way. However, I won't waste anyone's time explaining. Don't worry, I'm not holding a grudge against you. I can't since I don't know who you are.

Classified, I apologize if my first statement gave you the impression that I was having a short temper with you, or if I gave you a bad impression of this site and its members. The community here is very nice, and I hope you enjoy it. Also, right after I hit "post" for my first message I realized I forgot to add:

Re: help with some logic puzzles...

We just get tired of saying "Don't post in the forums... sigh" like part of an infinite sequence.

Go bug a search engine with those problems, they are out there.

An alternative method

Why not answer:
A man with a seven-gallon bucket and a 4 gallon bucket goes to a well to exactly five gallons of water. He has no container other than the buckets. How can he get exactly five gallons of water
Go to a shop, sell the buckets and buy five gallons of water

Ms. Marino assigned 2 homework problems the first night of class. On each of the following nights she gave twice as many problems as the previous night. After four night, all the homework problems in the first unit had been assigned. How many homework problems were assigned in the 1st unit?
All of them

If she continued this pattern, how many prolems would she assign the tenth night?
None, all of them where already assigned the fourth night

A boy in an anicent history class brought in a coin marked 345 BC
I am sorry, I know nothing about anicent history.

I tried the above on Vlad Dracul, using the Aspiring Novice (by accident the first time) and he gave up. Though I admit I should have done what I post further down. Sorry. Anyway, people will have some fun instea

Okay, okay, I know, this isn't very polite, but posting puzzles when asking not to do it here isn't either. But we can always let it be followed with nikki's comment. (The welcome included :))

Aspiring Novice, I agree with a lot of what you say, but I don't think nikki is short tempered. nikki has been around here at Perplexus for a long time and has probably posted this comment several times. I can understand that sometimes she/he's fed up with it. nikki, maybe you should store the answer to his postings under your F1 button :)

Re: help with some logic puzzles...

Nikki: sorry, i realise my words sounded as harsh as yours, if not harsher.
Hugo: Good idea! That thread you mentioned is much more light-hearted than this one (which i take some blame for so i apologise again)

Re: help with some logic puzzles...

I'm new here so I'll give a go at it............

Fill the 4gal bucket.........pour into 7gal bucket.
Fill the 4gal bucket again.......fill remainder of 7gal bucket
which will leave 1 gal left in 4gal bucket.(4x2)-7=1.
Empty the 7gal bucket and pour the remaining 1 gal from 4gal bucket into it.
Fill 4gal bucket and pour into 7gal bucket.
There is now 5 gal in 7gal bucket.

2+4+8+16=30 problems in first unit all assigned by the fourth day, thus there would be none left to assign on day ten.

No coins minted before the common era have a date on them,so a date of 345 BC is an obvious fake.

How'd I do?

Lol, you just did the same thing I did when I first joined the site. We are not supposed to answer those questions here. It is frowend upon.

At least I didn't have 5 messages ahead of me saying that we are not supposed to anwswer...
