A classic game (Posted on 2005-06-22) Difficulty: 3 of 5
Substitute digits for letters (different letters, different digits; same letters, same digits) so ALPHABET + LETTERS = SCRABBLE. No number begins with zero.

Can you manage without a computer program?

Thank you, OOO, youīre right. Letīs go...

A  L  P  H  A  B  E  T

    L  E  T  T  E  R  S

-----------------------

S C  R  A  B B  L  E

Since B + E = B, E could only be 0 or 9.

If E = 9,  (A + T + 1) = B or (A + T + 1) = (10 + B).

If (A + T + 1) = B, since A = (S - 1), we have (S + T) = B. a contradiction, once (S + T) = E.

If (A + T + 1) = (10 + B), we have (S + T) = (10 + B), another contradiction, once (10 + B) couldnīt be equal to E.

Therefore, E = 0.

The rest is in my previous comment.

Thank again, OOO.
