What has roots as nobody sees,

And yet never grows?

I have read the Hobbit also and the answer is a mountain.  I was thinking that it could also be a tall tale.  Nobody sees the roots of a tall tale because it is all mae up by someone and some tall tales are pretty tall and could go on a long time but they do not tchnically grow.
