Telly's calendar (Posted on 2013-08-06) Difficulty: 2 of 5
Telly Monster is a friend of mine who loves triangles (and puzzles). He has asked me to make him a wooden calendar using triangles for the months. Can you design 9 wooden triangles with a letter in each corner that when rotated or rearranged will spell out all of the months of the year.

For example:

-/J\---/U\---/L\---/Y\-
/? ?\ /? ?\ /? ?\ /? ?\

The first thing I had to realize was that the needed letters in their required numbers exhausted all 27 available slots, so no letter could be repeated more than the largest number of times it appeared in any one month:

JAANUURRYFEEEBMCHPILGSTOOVD

The nine-letter month starts us off with a necessary spread to identify tiles:

123456789
SEPTEMBER

Trial and error, making sure never to use more than the allotment for any given letter, starting with the -EMBER and -OBER months, gives:

123456789
SEPTEMBER
DOCVOJUYG
FANRAUHIL
JANUARY     6237598
FEBRUARY    12796548
MARCH       62437
APRIL       23489
MAY         628
JUNE        6732
JULY        6798
AUGUST      279614
SEPTEMBER   123456789
OCTOBER     2345789
NOVEMBER    32456789
DECEMBER    12356789
