The assertion credited to Derrick Niederman:
"... 38 when written as Roman numeral XXXVIII is the last Roman
numeral alphabetically of all possible Roman numerals," is incorrect.
The Roman numerals X, V, I are not in alphabetical sequence, but in reverse alphabetical sequence. As x is alphabetically the last in the sequence of distinct Roman numerals, and v is the next to the last, Niederman correctly identifies the last Roman numeral in the set where the number is in reverse alphabetical order.
