At the Olympic Games (1) (Posted on 2003-10-07) Difficulty: 3 of 5
Three reporters were discussing the hockey results. The TV reporter said "Either Brazil won gold, or Chile won silver, but not both." The radio reporter similarly started to say "Either Argentine won silver, or Chile won …", but a sudden noise cut him off.

The press reporter, who was lucky enough to hear the complete sentence, could reason out the final order of the three countries. What was it?

Solution Puzzle Solution : Detailed Explamation Comment 21 of 21 |
(In reply to solution by K Sengupta)

On the basis of TV reporter's comment the following cases are feasible:
GOLD:       Brazil................  Argentina
SILVER:    Argentina ......... Chile
BRONZE:  Chile ................ Brazil

If the radio reporter said "bronze", then the possibilities would have been:
(Gold, Bronze, Silver)= (Chile, Argentina, Brazil), (Argentina, Brazil, Chile). None of these two cases conform to the above table. Therefore, NO solution is possible in this case.

If the radio reporter had said "silver", Then we have precisely the two cases in the above table are the solutions. So, no definite conclusion regarding the final standings is possible.

If the radio reporter had said "gold", then we observe from the table above that Chile did NOT win  gold. Accordingly,  the only possible option is that Argentina won silver.

Consequently,  referring to the table, the final standings are:
GOLD      : Brazil
SILVER    : Argentina
BRONZE  : Chile
