T-Hexomino Packing (Posted on 2016-08-26) Difficulty: 3 of 5
A T-hexomino is depicted below:
+--+--+--+--+--+
| | | | | |
+--+--+--+--+--+
      | |
      +--+
Prove that this hexomino cannot tile any size rectangle.

Consider its 3-D counterpart. Show that 25 of them can pack a 5x5x6 box.

No Rectangle Solution:
In order to fill a corner of the rectangle, two of the hexominos would need to be placed as depicted:
AAAAA..
B.A....
B......
BB.....
B......
B......
.......
But this creates a hole that cannot be filled, therefore the T-hexomino cannot tile any rectangle.

5x5x6 Box Solution:
The letters A-Y represent the 25 3-D T-hexominos. This shows the 5x5x6 box split into 6 layers of 5x5.
Layer 1 Layer 2 Layer 3 Layer 4 Layer 5 Layer 6
