Design a schedule for a 10-week season involving 8 teams playing one game a week, on Sunday. The teams are divided into two divisions, east and west.

Each team plays the teams in its division twice, home and away.
Each team plays the teams in the other division once.
Each team plays 5 home games and 5 away games.
No team ever has 3 home games in a row, or 3 away games in a row

Solution solution with games spelled out | Comment 2 of 3 |

The first six weeks are intraleague:

Tabulated number is the week of the game.

     team at left
       is home

East division:

      1  2  3  4    notes for interleague play

   1     1  3  5    game 7 at home
   2  2     6  3    game 7 away
   3  4  5     1    game 7 at home
   4  6  4  2       game 7 away

West division:

   5     1  3  5    game 7 at home
   6  2     6  3    game 7 away
   7  4  5     1    game 7 at home
   8  6  4  2       game 7 away

      5  6  7  8

The last four weeks are interleague:

Arrowheads (^ and <) point to home team; numbers to week number.

      5    6    7    8

      ^              ^
   1 10   <7   <8    9

                ^    ^
   2 <9  <10    7    8

           ^    ^
   3 <8    9   10   <7

      ^    ^
   4  7    8   <9  <10

I think the intraleague weeks agree with SH's scheduling as the same pair of teams play in successive weeks, but the interleague play is not quite the same, as, in any given week, not all the same league is at home.
