Take an electronic kitchen scale, a scale with a spring dial, and a balance scale into an elevator.
Put nothing on them. Indeed, press the tare button, or adjust them so that they all read zero.

I find it hard to believe that the electronic scale will measure weight only if it's applied at the center of the surface of the scale. Suppose you weigh, say a large manila envelope with a couple of ounces uniformly distributed, large enough to cover the whole scale. Will the weight read zero?
If on the other hand, extended objects can be weighed, the tare must account for the weight of the platform, which will effectively increase as the elevator accelerates upward.
