ABCDE is a concave pentagon with angle BCD being concave. Angles BAE, BCD, and CDE are right angles. Given AB=4, BC=3, CD=4, and DE=5, find the length of AE.

Solution Two solutions | Comment 1 of 15
BE is the hypotenuse of a triangle with sides 4 and 8 so BE^2=4^2+8^2=80.

Now we have right triangle BAE.  4^2+AE^2=80.  AE=8.

Another way to see this is to complete rectangle BCDF.  Then triangles BAE and BFE are congruent.  FE=AE=8
