Old man - older problem (Posted on 2002-06-28) Difficulty: 2 of 5
(Hopefully this one hasn't been posted it's a really old one I think don't post a solution if you ALREADY know the answer I haven't posted the solution cause I want people to actually try and not just look at the question then giveup right away.)

An old man has a boat and needs to cross the river, the problem is he has three things he needs to get across the river a chicken, a dog, and a sack of grain. He has three problems:

  • His boat can only support himself and one item,
  • The dog can't be left with the chicken, and
  • The chicken can't be left with the grain.

How does he get across with all three items intact?

You can't have the cannibals ever outnumber the missionaries at anytime or they will eat eachother.
    (i think metjoo forgot this?)

    1) two cannibals cross (MMMC-CC-)
    2) one cannibal returns (MMMC-C-C)
    3) two cannibals cross (MMM-CC-C)
    4) one of them returns (MMM-C-CC)
    5) two missionaries cross (MC-MM-CC)
    6) one cannibal AND a missionary return (MC-MC-MC)
    7) two missionaries cross (CC-MM-MC)
    8) a cannibal returns (CC-C-MMM)
    9) two cannibals cross (C-CC-MMM)
    10) a cannibal returns (C-C-MMMC)
    11) two cannibals cross (-CC-MMMC)
    10) FINISHED (-MMMCCC)

quite a bit harder than i thought
but pretty easy at the same time
