Can you design an equation with two unknowns and still find the value of one?

In my example, you have to specify that both x and y are real, otherwise, x can be anything and y = ix

in friedlinguini's and levik's examples, the value of y was totally irrelevant; it could be real, immaginary, or complex.
| a + bi | = √(aČ + bČ)
