The similar sheet (Posted on 2004-03-22) Difficulty: 2 of 5
I have a sheet of paper with a grid drawn on it, filling the whole paper. This grid has 4 rows and 9 columns, forming 36 congruent rectangles. Also, each of these rectangles is similar in proportion to the whole sheet.

If the sheet is 15 inches wide, how long is it?

No, they aren't. A square is specifically a rectangle with all sides of equal length. The equation there was based on the sides of the the small rectangles being equal. They cannot be squares, since they are similar to a 9x4 version of themselves. A 9x4 combination of squares cannot be a square.
