Fill the Grid (Posted on 2004-01-21) Difficulty: 5 of 5
In the 4x4 grid below, 32 consecutive two digit numbers (45 to 76) have been packed in it.
1 3 5 9
2 5 4 8
0 7 6 2
1 6 3 9
*****
The challenge: Pack as many consecutive 3 digit numbers as possible into a 9x9 grid. The numbers may be read from any direction. No leading zeros.

Rawlyn used a genetic algorithm to find this grid containing 100 consecutive numbers:
Sequence: 800 - 899 (100)
6 7 8 5 9 8 4 6 6
9 8 7 1 7 4 8 6 1
1 9 0 8 8 3 8 2 8
8 8 8 6 9 8 8 0 8
3 0 5 5 0 3 2 1 4
0 8 5 7 1 6 7 9 1
8 6 8 8 8 8 8 8 8
3 7 2 5 3 8 2 4 1
0 0 4 8 3 2 8 5 2
The maximum may never be known since there are 10^81 possible grids.
