The Monkey Tail Hunter (Posted on 2004-05-28) Difficulty: 2 of 5
You are standing a far ways away from the base of a tree from which a monkey is hanging on a branch exactly 5 meters above the ground.

This monkey has psychic relaxation syndrome, which means that as soon as the gun goes off, he will let go of the tree branch without realizing it and fall down.

The problem with this is the monkey will fall, and not be where it was before you shot the gun, so it will be in another spot when the bullet is next to the tree. How far below the spot where the monkey's tail is before the shot is fired should you aim so the monkey's tail will be hit regardless of its "letting go" of the tree branch?

(Assume there is zero air resistance.)

This is all good theory, but....

What kind of gun? 30-30? 30-06? 243? 270? 22?

All these rifles have different muzzle velocities, bullet wieghts, and different ranges. they all have similar teardrop shapes to negate the air resistance as much as possible. A 22 long will actually rise after leaving the barrel. I hit a bird in a tree at 300 yds with a 44-40, but the rear sight had to be raised about 3/4". About the only higher arc you would see is in slow-pitch softball!

But I do agree with erik, if you want the tail, don't shoot it. Adjust the sights, aim for center mass.
