Who's the odd one out? (Posted on 2004-04-10) Difficulty: 2 of 5
Of the words listed below, one is "odd man out." This has nothing to do with the number of vowels, consonants or syllables. Can you find the misfit?

LUMP REAM SAGA PALM

hmmm, "Odd man out"

well, let's take odd man out, which has three letters in each and there are three word similiar to the list given, which has four letters in each and fours words. it may have nothing to do with the numbers of vowels, consonants or syllables, but maybe with the number associated with the letter. let a=1, b=2, c=3,...., u=21. let's first focus on "odd man out"

odd: 15+4+4=23 is odd; man: 13+1+14=28 is even; out: 15+21+20=56 is even; therefore the sum of the numbers associated with the letters with one of the three is odd, it must be the odd man out in the list of four also.

LUMP:12+21+13+16=62; REAM: 18+5+1+13=37; SAGA: 19+1+7+1=28; PALM: 16+1+12+13=42; REAM must be the "odd man out" (Misfit). Oddly enough the sums for REAM and ODD are also prime. also please check my addition. this also proves that I got too much time on my hands.
