Will the real engineer please stand up? (Posted on 2004-05-18) Difficulty: 2 of 5
On a train, Smithe, Robins, and John are the fireman, conductor, and the engineer, but NOT respectively. Also aboard the train are three businessmen who have the same names: a Mr. Smithe, a Mr. Robins, and a Mr. John.

Mr. Robins Lives in New York. The conductor lives exactly halfway between Columbus and New York. Mr. John earns exactly $20,000 per year. The conductor's nearest neighbor, one of the passengers, earns exactly three times as much as the conductor. Smithe beats the fireman in billiards. The passenger whose name is the same as the conductor's lives in Columbus.

Who is the Engineer?

It is Smithe who is the engineer. Smithe cant be the fireman because he beat him at billiards. Now the conducter lives exactly between new york and columbus so Mr.Robin cant be the conducters closest neighbor and neither can Mr.John because 20,000 cant be evenly divided by 3 so Mr.John must live in Columbus. So the conducter is John because the man in columbus has the same name as conducter. Smithe must be the engirneer and robin the fireman.
