Summing powers (Posted on 2004-07-01) Difficulty: 3 of 5
I thought of three numbers.
Their sum is 6.
The sum of their squares is 8.
The sum of their cubes is 5.
What is the sum of their fourth powers?

I dont think there are any such 3 numbers that can satisfy the given rules.  I modeled this with the use of a spreadsheet, just with the sum being 6 and the sum of squares being 8. could not get near it.  Negative values not the answer for the square of any negative is positive. This conclusion seems to be supported by np_rt's solution which involved some clever algebra the result of which was an answer of 0!!!

To the author............is this problem posible???
