11, The 12 brown gloves implies 6 brown pair (left and right), the 8 black gloves implies 4 black pair. It is possible that he blindly pulls 6 brown left-hands and 4 black left-hands (or substitute right-hands for all the lefts), in which case he can pull 10 and STILL not have a pair (consisting of a left and right) of gloves.
