Wrenches (Posted on 2004-07-02) Difficulty: 2 of 5
There are 4 wrenches just unpacked from a box. They all look the same. There might be one defective item which is either heavier or lighter. Fortunately there is a fifth one that is standard. If you can use a scale to weigh only 2 times, can you find out:
  1. Is there a defective wrench?

  2. If there is a defective item, is it heavier or lighter?

Na you got it right, thats how I figured it too. Only I didnt write it all out, cut typing corners with mathmatic symbols for the less than/greater than bits. It more of an algebra prob than anything, I should know I had that only year before last. Its a simple prob if a sophmore can solve it with ease. And I did, in my head, then I wrote it out to check it for errors. Its sound man, I dont see how that could be wrong.
