A 10x10 square can obviously hold 100 unit circles (diameter=1) when arranged in rows and columns. What is the maximum number of non-overlapping unit circles a 10x10 square can hold if the circles are packed closer together?

brian says that 105 is NOT the maximum.

is it possible that the top row can be compacted enough to fit one more?

that is, to take the top left circle and jam it into the upper left corner, allowing the second circle in the top row to move a bit to the left.

after the ten circles jam together, is there room for one more?

is 106 the answer?
