Couple of Words (Posted on 2004-07-24) Difficulty: 3 of 5
What is the longest common English word you can spell without repeating a letter?

What is the longest (perhaps not-so-common) English word that can be written using only Roman numerals?

The longest word (15 letters) for the first part is 'UNCOPYRIGHTED.'

For the second part, since obscure words are allowed, the 'DIVIDIVI' is a kind of tropical tree. For more common words, thre are 'CIVIC,' 'MIMIC,' 'LIVID,' and 'CIVIL,' and for a bit more of a stretch, 'IMIDIC.'
As for words that are valid Roman numerals, I believe that 'MIX' (1009) is the longest such word (the only others being 'I' and 'MI').
