Whodunit Part 1: The Robbery (Posted on 2004-07-27) Difficulty: 4 of 5
Late last night, there was a robbery over on 17th Ave. S.

Very shortly after, ace detective Bill Bonche was on the scene. The residents of the house reported that they saw five people going about during the night of the crime, the first seen at 11:45 and the last at 12:30. They couldn't completely recall all of the suspects' descriptions, but did remember some of the details. For example, one witness noted that she saw a man who was 6'2" tall, but couldn't recall anything else about him or when she saw him.

With the clues the family gave them, you should be able to find out each suspect's height, hair color (including black), mode of transport (one was biking), and what time they came by the crime scene:

  1. The man who was 5'11" came by the house before the man who was walking (who wasn't the 5'7" man) and the man who has blonde hair.

  2. The man who was roller-skating was 6'2" or shorter. The man who was 6'6" came by the house after 12:05. The red haired man wasn't walking or running. The biker wasn't 5'7".

  3. The brown haired man came directly after the 6'9" man, who came directly after the man who was skateboarding, who came some time after the gray-haired man.

  4. The man who was running came at 12:05. The 6'6" man had blonde hair.

  5. The man who came at 12:15 was either 5'11" or 6'2". The gray haired man was taller than the man that came at 11:55.

duckygirl90 is correct.

We know that the skateboarder, the 6'9" man and the man with brown hair came consecutively, in that order, and that they all followed the gray haired man.  (Clue 3)  Thus, the skateboarder came at 11:55 or 12:05.  But the runner came at 12:05 (Clue 4), so the skateboarder came at 11:55, the 6'9 man at 12:05 and the brown haired man at 12:15.  The 6'9" man is the runner. (Clue 4), and the gray haired man came at 11:45 (Clue 3). The 6'6" man came at either 12:15 or 12:30 (Clue 2) and had blond hair (Clue 4).  From above, the brown-haired man is already at 12:15, so the 6'6" blond came by at 12:30.

The red haired man isn't the runner (Clue 2), so he has to be the skateboarder.  That means the 6'9" runner at 12:05 has black hair.  The 6'6" blond at 12:30 did not walk (Clue 1) or roller skate (Clue 2), so he is the biker. The 5'11" man cannot come at 12:15, as he precedes both the walker and the blond. (Clue 1) Thus, the 12:15 Brown Haired man is 6'2". (Clue 5). The gray haired man is taller than the skateboarder (Clue 5), so he is 5'11" and the skateboarder is 5'7".  He cannot be the walker (Clue 1), so he is the roller skater and the brown haired man is the walker.
