Dinner Party (Posted on 2004-10-27) Difficulty: 3 of 5
Professor Levik was talking to a colleague who told him about a dinner party he had attended with his wife. The colleague told him the following things about the party:

1. There were four married couples present.
2. Each person had a unique hobby.
3. The eight people were seated around a dinner table with the host and hostess at either end and three people seated on either side.
4. Only one married couple were seated beside each other.
5. A man was seated on either side of the hostess.
6. A woman was seated on either side of the host.
7. The hostess likes to ride horses.
8. Donna collects stamps.
9. Carol and her husband were seated on the same side of the table.
10. The piano player was seated next to his brother-in-law.
11. The person who grows roses was seated next to the person who does needlepoint.
12. Frank was seated directly across from the person who builds model planes.
13. Harold is seated to the immediate right of the hostess.
14. George and Betty were seated directly across from each other.
15. Alice is married to Edward.
16. Donna's sister-in-law is seated directly across from Carol.
17. The piano player was seated next to the hostess.
18. The stamp collector's husband was seated across from the model plane builder.
19. Carol was seated immediately to the left of George.
20. Alice is married to the fisherman.
21. The person who does needlepoint was seated across from the actress.
22. The actress was seated immediately to the right of the host.
23. The fisherman was seated across from his sister.
24. Frank was seated next to Edward.

What was each person's hobby, and where did they sit?

Unless you also meant disregarding the sister relation... I use the basic assumptions that the host is a male and the hostess is a female and that Frank, Edward, George and Harold are male and Donna, Carol, Alice and Betty are females.

The host (male) & hostess (female) are seated at the table ends and both flanked by people of the opposite gender. (5 & 6) Harold is to the right of the hostess(13) so Harold is not the host. The actress must be female as she is to the right of the host(22). The needle point fan must be female as she is across from the actress(21) and next to the host. The hostess is next to Harold on the right and another male on her left. The host is next to the actress on his right and the needlepoint fan.

This means the 4 males are sitting in the host seat, 2 males next to the hostess across from each other (one is Harold) and one other male in the middle of the table across from a female... but we don't know which side of the table.

Alice married the fisherman(20) & Alice married Edward(15) so Edward is the fisherman.

Frank and Edward are seated next to each other (24) so neither can be the host as the host is next to 2 females. George (the remaining male) must be the host seated at the end.

Neither Frank nor Edward can be seated in the middle on Harold's right, as that would require sitting next to a female on the side opposite Harold. Both must be together in the 2 open seats on the left of the hostess. George, the host is seated at the end so Betty (14) must be seated at the opposite end. Betty must be the hostess who likes horses.

Since we know that Edward, the fisherman is seated across from his sister (23) Edward cannot sit next to the hostess across from Harold. Edward must be in the middle across from a female and Frank must be next to the hostess across from Harold. Frank is across from the plane builder(12), so Harold must be the plane builder.

Since the piano player is next to the hostess (17), and Harold is the plane builder, the piano player must be Frank.

Since George is the host seated at the end, and Carol is seated immediately to George's left (19), Carol must be on the end next to the host, across from the actress. Since the needlepoint person is across from the actress(21),  Carol likes needlepoint.

Since Donna collects stamps (8), the only hobby left for George, the host, is tending roses. Since Donna is not the actress, she must be in the middle seat between Harold and Carol.
