I didn't do it. (Posted on 2004-11-04) Difficulty: 1 of 5
A terrible crime has been committed and the police round up the usual suspects. During the interrogation of the four men the following accusations and statements are made:

Anderson said "Brimmers did it."
Brimmers said "Dodge did it."
Carter said "I didn't do it."
Dodge said "Brimmers lied when he said I did it."

If only one of the four men was untruthful, which man committed the crime?

Let us denote the suspects Anderson, Brimmer, Carter and Dodge respectively by A, B, C and D.

Then, the possibilities are:

Guilty person.......Whether Feasible
A..........................No. Two suspects A and B are untruthful.
B........................ Yes. Only B is untruthful.
C........................ No. Three suspects A,B and C are untruthful.
D........................ No. Two suspects A and D are untruthful.

Consequently, Brimmer committed the crime.
