Or...   you could get 54.
If the first number is A and the second number is B,
Take the number of letters in the name of A times the number of letters in the name of B:

one * two = 3*3 = 9
three * four = 5 * 4 = 20
five * six = 4 * 3 = 12
seventeen * twelve = 9 * 6 = 54
