Lottery (Posted on 2005-01-27) Difficulty: 3 of 5
Sally, Joe, Bob, Fred, and Mary all won a prize in the school lottery. One of them won $500; one of them $196; another won $48; another, $16; and another, $2. Each of the students won in a different month: February, March, September, October, and December. How much money did each student win and in what month?

Clues:

1. At least one of the winners' names begins with the same letter as his or her winning month.

2. The girls won a total less than $250 and more than $205

3. One of the people with the shortest names won the least and the other won the most.

4. Mary won the month before Joe.

5. One of the girls won just in time for Christmas shopping.

6. The March and September winners won the most.

7. Sally won more than Fred

sally won $48 in december

joe won $2 in october

Bob won $500 in March

Fred won $16 in February

Mary won $196 in September

This meets all the clues correctly.

At least one winner's name begins w/ the same letter as the month they won in (fred - february)

the girls winning total had to be between 205 and 250, meaning each had to win either 196, 48, or 16.

the two shortest names won the highest and lowest amounts (bob won high, joe won low)

mary won the month before joe (september comes before october)

sally won in time for christmas shopping in december (she had to win in december b/c one girl had to win for xmas shopping and mary couldn't have b/c she had to win the month before joe and if she won in december then joe would have to win in january, which was not an option)

march and september winners bob and mary won the most (mary had to win $196 and sally had to win $48 because, as i already said, mary had to win in september, the month before joe in october, leaving sally as the girl to win in december and we were told that march and september winners won the most, eliminating sally (who won in december) as the girl to win $196

--- joe had to win in october because it was sequential to mary's winning in september, and fred had to win in february to  satisfy the same letter criterion.

Since sally won $48 and we know that she won more than fred, that leave fred with the $16 prize.
