Only One Question (Posted on 2005-02-16) Difficulty: 3 of 5
The following two facts are known about Adam, Bert, and Carl:

1) Of Adam, Bert, and Carl, there is one knight, one knave, and one liar.
2) Adam said once, "Bert said that Carl isn't a knight."

Can you ask one yes/no question to one person and figure out who is who? If not, how many questions must you ask?

it can be done in one question. | Comment 11 of 23 |
Lets assume that the statement is true. THats would mean that neither Adam nore Bert are liars. That leaves Carl as the liar, and since he is not a knight, the statement is still true. Now just ask Adam or Bert if they are the Knight. If Adam says yes, then adam is a knight Bert is a Knave carl is the liar> IF he says no, then Adam is the Knave and bert is the Knight, carl would still be the liar. You can also bert the same question.
