Ice Floating in Water (Posted on 2005-04-21) Difficulty: 3 of 5

You have a cube of ice floating in a glass of water. The question is what fraction of the ice will be above the water line? Assume that the ice is not bobbing.

Most of you have probably heard the answer to this before. But please provide a proof or solution, along with your assumptions.

Bottom Line | Comment 20 of 31 |

Here's the bottom line Jonathan. As many others have said, life is filled with ambiguities. That is why my problem asked for your solution along with your assumptions.

If you want to be picky and bring up every little point, please do so constructively. By that I mean, if you want to say bring up the different types of water, then give the solution for each. Give us a solution for salt water, sea water, and every single type of water in the world you can think of.

What I am asking is for you to give the solution to the case you have in mind; not to bring up every single case there is.
