Dividing a donut (Posted on 2005-04-23) Difficulty: 3 of 5
I want to divide the surface of a donut into as many different regions as possible. The regions can be any shape, as long as they are each in one piece. Each region must touch each of the other regions (touching on a corner doesn't count). How many regions can I make?

Sorry armando I fear it doesn't work.

After the first 3 cuts you would have the following

11111111112222222222
33334444444444433333

Now cutting the upper , outer part would give

555555556666666677777777
111111111111222222222222
333333444444444444333333

The problem is that if 5 touches 2 (touching on a corner doesn't count), then 7 doesn't touch 1 and the other way around.
