Is there a six-letter word? (Posted on 2005-05-03) Difficulty: 3 of 5
Make the longest word you can make out of these six letters:
A, E, I, N, S, T.

Rules:

  1. No letter may be used twice.
  2. No other letter or symbol may be used.
  3. It must be a common English word.
  4. No proper nouns.

[BAD solution....Uses letters other than the six given. I thought the puzzle meant "has to use those six letters - but can use others...." That was my fault, not the fault of the original wording of the puzzle.]

If the puzzle wording means that the word must contain A, E,I,N,S and T, but no letter anywhere in the word can be used more than once, then the longest common words are:

metalworkings (13 letters), subordinately (13 letters),
bankruptcies (12), discountable (12), discrepantly (12), dismountable (12), drumbeatings (12), earthmovings (12),
exculpations (12), exhaustingly (12), expurgations (12),
nightwalkers (12), outspreading (12), questionably (12),
stenographic (12), unhospitable (12), unmistakedly (12),
abolishment (11), abridgments (11), adventurism (11),
designatory (11), disavowment (11), disturbance (11),
exhumations (11), forecasting (11), inscrutable (11),
misanthrope (11), pathfinders (11), personality (11),
precautions (11), readjusting (11), regulations (11), speculating (11), speculation (11), subordinate (11), tenaciously (11),
thanksgiver (11), timberlands (11), and trampolines (11)
