Question a slight amendment... and a question | Comment 3 of 9 |
(In reply to solution with explanation by John Reid)

One of my comments in the previous post was perhaps not as accurate as it could have been.  I claimed that any number of at least 3 digits that ended in xy00 (with x and y not both zero) would be a possible solution to the problem.

However, we can see that 100, 1000, 10000, and 100000 are all possible solutions.  So perhaps I should modify my previous claim!  I now claim that any number of at least three digits that has the form ...wxyz00 (where not all of the digits w,x,y and z are zero) could be a solution.  (If all of those 4 digits were zeros, the number would always end in the letter N, I believe.)

My question - given that the correct answer has 3 digits, is there only one correct answer among the numbers 100, 200, 300, ..., 900?  If so, which is it, and why?  I admit that I chose 100 arbitrarily as my proposed solution.  Perhaps there is some further depth to the problem that I haven't yet seen.

ps  I'll stop posting now!  :)
