Yesterday I was at the airport at the capital of one of the US fifty states. There was a sign with two lines: on the first there was the name of the (capital) city, and on the second the name of the state. Curiously, the two lines had no letters in common.

Where was I?

You were in Honolulu, Hawaii (not Pierre, South Dakota.)  

As we learned in "A Man Without Eyes" (which was not in the TRICKS section either, by the way), "no letters in common" does not preclude one letter in common.

So we narrow it down to three airports: Honolulu, Hawaii (one H in common), Salem, Oregon (one E) and Pierre, South Dakota (no letter in common). Then we use the subtle hint "Where was I ?". That eliminates Salem Oregon. There is no "I" in Salem or  in Oregon.

Now we're down to Honolulu, Hawaii and Pierre, South Dakota. We eliminate Pierre, South Dakota, because the puzzle says "No letters", not "no letter". (And the clever phrase "Where was I?" also makes us think of the old TV series "Hawaiian Eye".)

My answer is Honolulu, Hawaii.
