Might Merely Meet (Posted on 2005-06-07) Difficulty: 2 of 5
A boy and a girl agree to meet in the park. Each will show up at a random time between 12:00 and 13:00, and wait for the other person 20 minutes, but not past 13:00.

What is the probability that they will actually meet?

is the boy smart? | Comment 9 of 12 |
If the boy is smart he will show up at 12:40, then he will meet with her 100% of the time, because she will be fixing her hair or primping or something of the sort and you can absolutely be certain she will not show up before 12:20 and that is being generous, it is really like 12:30 but then when you are at 100% probability it really does not matter too much anyway.  This way too, the most you will have to wait is your twenty minutes, and if she does happen to show up earlier you will be wasting her time and not yours.
