The number of four-letter words to use wasn't stated neither was the direction and it didn't say you couldn't repeat words so I came up with the following:

E   Z   O   O
N   E   X   O
O   R   E   Z
Z   O   N   E

The 1st 3 rows are backwards spelling, Ooze, Oxen & Zero and the 4th row is forwards spelling Zone.

The columns use the same words, 1st column backwards spelling Zone, last 3 columns are forwardm spelling Zero, Oxen and Ooze.

Also works with the first row and last column being Doze instead of Ooze.
