Brianjn, probably because of no need of conversation (all that I had to do in my professional life, was reading, not writing, nor speaking), in "my time" (I´m 58-years now), we didn´t have to discuss in English with other peoples.

When I´m watching movies, with subtitles, I try to understand what they are saying, even losing the subtitles.

But, I confess that when I really need to speak in English to someone, I have serious troubles !!
