L.A. to Hawaii (Posted on 2005-06-17) Difficulty: 3 of 5
It is about 2244.5 nautical miles from Los Angeles, CA to Honolulu, HI. A boat starts from being at rest in Los Angeles Harbor and proceeds at 1 knot per hour to Honolulu. How long does it take?

1 Knot = 1 nautical mile per hour, a speed measure, so 1 Knot per hour is an acceleration measure. Starting at zero speed and A acceleration, after T time you travel ½AT²; equating this with 2244.5 gives T=67.

This solution has a slight problem: the boat will be moving at AT speed (=67 nautical miles per hour, about 75 miles/hour or 120 kilometers/hour) and it may be hard to stop!
