I've been wondering since you've posted this comment...
In weights and scales problems, as a habit I always first count the
number of possible answers and possible results. If the number of
possible answers (which rings are heavier) exceeds the number of
possible results from weighings (tip left/right or balance). But
if such a problem asks to pick out only one of the gold rings or
something of the like, how many possible answers are there between
which we must differentiate? 7 is my guess... but I'm not so sure.
