How Fast?!? (Posted on 2005-08-08) Difficulty: 2 of 5
You are driving a 3.2 Litre, V6 car whose engine speed is 3500rpm.

If the piston face diameter is 80mm, then what is the average speed of the piston?

3.2 litres, refers to total piston volume

Assuming the piston head moves as a sine wave, the maximum speed of the head would be pi/2 times the average speed, making the maximum speed of each piston in its cycle 70 km/hr (exactly) or 43 mi/hr.
