Possibly referring to casting nines?  Since I learned about that technique here on Perplexus, it seemed like a possibility and I was eager to try out new knowledge.  I fiddled with that a bit and didn't get anywhere. 

So now I'm thinking about the "choice of numbers" you mentioned...
