Marriages (Posted on 2005-09-24) Difficulty: 2 of 5
Four couples play at the Knights and Liars Bridge Club. The four guys are Alex, Bert, Carl and Dave. The four gals are Alice, Betty, Carol and Diane. It is known that four of the eight are liars and the other four are knights. From the statements they make below, determine who are in each of the four couples.
Alex: I married Betty.
Bert: Carol married Carl.
Carl: Dave married Betty.
Dave: Diane married Alex.
Alice: Alex married Carol.
Betty: I married Carl.
Carol: I married Alex.
Diane: Dave married Alice.

Alex and Carol are married

Bert and Diane are married

Carl and Betty are married

Dave and Alice are married

why?

Both Carol and Alice agree that Carol and Alex are married. So either Alex is a liar, or both Carol and Alice are liars.

If Carol and Alice = knight,   the Alex = liar

If Carol and Alice = knight,  then Bert = liar

If Carol and Alice = knight,  then Dave - liar

If Betty = knight,  then Alex and Carl = liar

therefore all the men are liars and the women tell the truth (hehe).

This gives the solution of the four couples above via process of elimination. It does not work out any other way (unless I missed something)
