Remove a Square (Posted on 2005-09-06) Difficulty: 1 of 5
Five squares are made up from the 16 sticks below:
   _ _ _
 _|_|_|_|
|_|_|
Move just two of the sticks without disturbing or overlapping the other 14 sticks to make only 4 identical squares, still using all 16 sticks.

Great!  You were persistent, 'trying' in fact.  Stop! Look!  Do you recall a discussion of idioms

Trying ... normally means attempting to do something.

And yet ..

the term can take on a very negative sense:

like you are "testing my limits" in this situation.   Thus one might remark, "You are trying!" ...meaning .. " and you could face consequences!"

Offered: Another example of 'hidden language'.   I believe that I was once told that French was the simplest language because ..  one word had only one interpretation.

Maturity suggests to me that every language has its own kind of phrasing to reflect a meaning that is alien to a non-native.

[Seems like a good forum thread - especially for advice for those who might transcend interntional and cultural boundaries]
