Evaluate this sum (Posted on 2005-12-21) Difficulty: 4 of 5
Evaluate this sum in terms of n (the number of terms):
        1      2       4        8          16
   S = --- + ----- + ----- + ------- + ---------- + .....
        2      5       41     3,281    21,523,361

Santa is bringing me new spectacles for Christmas.  When I saw "... ", I saw infinite series.  Hurry up Santa.

Meantime, adjusting the partial sum formula so that n is the number of terms, I do not see anything amiss with the Bob/Charlie solution

s(n) = 1-2^(n+1)/(3^2^n-1)

which works for the partial sums of the series given or do you have some other series in mind?
